2016 Balgownie Estate Shiraz

2016 Balgownie Estate Shiraz
New Vintage Release

Shiraz is one of the original plantings at our vineyard in Bendigo where the continental climate and alluvial soils produce ideal ripening conditions. Shiraz has been produced by Balgownie Estate since the very first vintage in 1972. The vineyard at Bendigo has consistently produced sensational fruit that forms the backbone of this extraordinary wine that combines a rich weighty body with elegance and structure that is delightful to drink as a young wine, yet will reward careful cellaring over 16 years.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
"Open and static fermenters, a mix of whole bunches/whole berries and destemmed/crushed grapes, 20 days on skins, matured in French oak (30% new) for 14 months, followed by 4 months in older oak. Long and very well balanced. James Halliday’s 2020 Wine Companion - Rating 95
Ratings
"Smoky and spicy, with meaty blackberry, cassis, dark plum and creamy vanilla oak backed by suggestions of charcuterie. Long and faintly mineral, with deep layers of black and red fruits, chocolatey oak and firm, drying tannins finishing with length, polish and a hint of blueberry." Jeremy Oliver - Rating 94
Vineyard Notes
The consistent warm conditions across the Spring and Summer of 2016 resulted in healthy vines producing excellent fruit. The dry conditions continued through harvest and coupled with green harvesting to reduce yields, contributed to the production of top quality fruit. The Shiraz fruit was harvested by hand over three separate passes through the vineyard to ensure that the berries were delivered to the winery at their optimum.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was destemmed and crushed and was then pumped straight to small open vats for fermentation. A slow fermentation on skins over the next 14 to 20 days occurred with the number of pump overs and plunging kept to a minimum and to maintain the quality of the fruit. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (30% new), and bottled without fining.
