Balgownie Estate

2014 Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz

2014 Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz

The Old Vine Shiraz demands the highest quality fruit and is only produced when the vintage conditions are impeccable. It is drawn from the best twelve rows of the original vineyards that date from 1969. A hand crafted, opulent red wine that combines richness and weight with poise and structure. A beautiful wine to drink now, but one that will benefit from time in the cellar.

Tasting Notes
"A wine crafted from the best 12 rows of the original '69 plantings, aged for a longer period in oak. Graphite and licorella tension combine to give a pumice bite to the full-throttle notes of dark fruits and anise. The coffee-grind tannins are firmly embedded. Only time will tell, but this is a sumptuous show of force meeting regional style, rather than the compelling textural and aromatic study of the single block wines." 95/100 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion

Vineyard Notes
Vintage 2014 did not begin in perfect style with a light frost during flowering in November. The resulting crop produced small berries with rich and concentrated flavours in excellent condition. Bunch thinning prior to harvest kept yields to a minimum and encouraged the further development of intense flavours in the fruit. The fruit was harvested by hand in several passes through the vineyard to ensure that the grapes were picked in peak condition.
Winemaker Notes
The Old Vine Shiraz was made using traditional wine making techniques. It was destemmed into open vats where it was fermented over ten days with daily hand plunging. After a further week of maceration on skins to extract flavour and fine tannins, the wine was pressed and then racked to barrel. The wine was matured in a combination of new and old French oak barrels for twenty-four months prior to racking and bottling. The Old Vine Shiraz was finally bottle matured for the next three years prior to release.
Food Pairing Notes
Standing rib roast served with Paris mash.
