Balgownie Estate

2012 Balgownie Estate Chardonnay

2012 Balgownie Estate Chardonnay

"The very cool season provided perfect fruit, whole-bunch pressed, matured for 11 months on lees with batonnage in French barriques (30% new). Six gold medals and a trophy. The colour is still bright and pale, a signal of what is to come. It’s vibrantly fresh and delicious with white peach and white nectarine on the long lingering palate.96/100 James Halliday Wine Magazine"

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
There is a wonderful interplay between perfectly ripened and elegant stone fruit characters and balanced acidity, combined with delicate oak notes. The palate exhibits great concentration and complexity derived from beautiful old vine fruit. Accompanied by a delightful, creamy yeast-derived mouthfeel the flavours are savoury and cool, culminating in a very long fine finish.
"...this smells quite fresh - green figs and biscuity oak. Surprising acid gives shape to the quite worked, nutty and golden hued palate too. It's full, a little blunt but also nicely contained - everything you'd sort of want in a slightly old school Chardonnay..." 92 points Andrew Graham Australian Wine Review

Vineyard Notes
The 2012 Estate Chardonnay started with exemplary grapes displaying an exceptional balance of ripeness and acid and a lovely concentration of flavours. The grapes were hand-harvested in cool conditions on the 12th of February.
Winemaker Notes
Our Estate Chardonnay was whole bunch pressed and provided free run juice with a balance of concentrated flavours, acid and notable elegance. Barrel fermentation took place over a six week period after which the wine was aged on lees for a further ten months. Regular batonnage (lees stirring) was employed to promote mid-palate complexity. After eleven and a half months in oak barriques our Chardonnay was carefully filtered and bottled. With careful cellaring this wine will continue to develop for 6 to 7 years.
Food Pairing Notes
Roast free range chicken with chestnut purée.
