Balgownie Estate

2016 Black Label Cabernet Merlot

2016 Black Label Cabernet Merlot
New Vintage Release

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a very often blended together – they work together to produce a more complex wine. The richness of the Cabernet provides the structure for the wine, while the Merlot provides a soft, suppleness to round out the palate. Balgownie’s Black Label Cabernet Merlot has weight combined with a lovely depth of flavour and complexity. The wine has black currant, raisins, pepper and spice flavours balanced by the soft, plum roundness of the Merlot and a touch of oak. This is a very versatile wine that is ideal for a barbecue or any roast dishes such as lamb or beef.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The Cabernet Merlot has aromas of blackcurrant, pepper, blood plum, and a hint of mint and spicy oak. The palate is concentrated and balanced with flavours of red fruit, raisins, plum and a touch of spice backed with gentle oak. The wine has richness and weight with fine tannins and a long lingering finish. Drinks very beautifully now, but will cellar for a further 3 to 5 years.
Vineyard Notes
Vintage conditions were moderately warm in Bendigo, providing a good ripening environment. Despite the compressed nature of the 2016 vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were quickly hand-picked at optimal ripeness and delivered to the winery.
Winemaker Notes
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were vinified separately in the winery, with the individual batches being crushed into a combination of small, open fermenters and stainless-steel tanks. The fermenting batches were hand plunged and pumped over daily to extract colour and tannins from the skins. Once the wine had reached dryness, it was pressed to French oak barriques (15% new) where it matured over 14 months before being bottled.
Food Pairing Notes
Roast shoulder of lamb with a red wine jus.
