The cool climate of the Yarra Valley lends itself to the production of premium chardonnay with fine and elegant character. This chardonnay was fermented with wild yeast to add complexity to the finished wine. It spent 11 months on less while maturing in French oak barrels – a combination of 30% new barrels and 70% old barrels.

Tasting Notes
The moderate temperatures of the 2016 vintage resulted in elegant and balanced fruit from our Yarra Valley vineyards. The vineyards are planted exclusively with the Mendoza clone which enjoys the more moderate climate and when yields are kept low, produces fruit with concentration and flavour. An elegant and crisp wine with a complex array of flavours of lime, stone fruit, nougat and cream backed by gentle toasty oak notes. The textural palate is balanced by the fine acid finish.

Vineyard Notes
Balgownie’s long familiarity with growing and producing Chardonnay has been translated to the cooler climate of the Yarra Valley. The fruit for the Estate Chardonnay represents the best section of the Yarra Valley vineyards, with yields kept to a minimum through careful management and green harvesting. The grapes were hand-harvest in several passes through the vineyards to ensure that they were picked at their optimum ripeness.
Winemaker Notes
The Estate Chardonnay was whole bunch pressed and the free run juice was fermented using indigenous, wild yeast. Barrel fermentation took place over a six week period after which the wine was aged on lees for a further 11 months to promote mid-palate complexity and mouthfeel. The wine was aged in a combination of new (30%) French oak and seasoned oak barriques and puncheons.
