Balgownie Estate

2015 Rock Block Shiraz

2015 Rock Block Shiraz
New Vintage Release

“This site is a tough position in which the vines struggle to embed their root system. The wine is a highly savoury blend of black olive and anise, impeccably balanced and sinuous, spiralling across the mouth as it tries to shed its firm carapace of moreish tannins and marked acidity.” 94/100 James Halliday’s Wine Companion 2018

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Huon Hooke’s Review “Very deep, bright, youthful red/purple colour. The bouquet is sweaty with a hint of reduction when first poured, also discreet plum, spice and charcuterie nuances. It's very bold and young, brash and still immature, slightly minty and quite firm on the palate. It's a little raw and needs cellaring. A more traditional style of Balgownie shiraz. 93/100 Drink 2020 to 2035”

Vineyard Notes
The tough growing condition of the Rock Block results in smaller, hardy vines that are self-regulating. The quality of the fruit produced in 2015 has allowed us to produce a single vineyard shiraz from this vineyard for the first time. The fruit was hand harvested at its optimum.
Winemaker Notes
At the winery the fruit was destemmed and partially crushed before being pumped to open vats for fermentation. The wine spent 24 days on skins undergoing gentle plunging and pump overs to extract tannin and colours from the skins. At the conclusion of fermentation, the wine was racked to French oak barriques (25% new) where it spent nine months. The wine was bottled unfined and with minimal sulphur additions, before spending two years in the bottle prior to release.
