Balgownie Estate

2015 Black Label Cabernet Merlot

2015 Black Label Cabernet Merlot

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are a very often blended together – they work together to produce a more complex wine. The richness of the Cabernet provides the structure for the wine, while the Merlot provides a soft, suppleness to round out the palate. Balgownie’s Black Label Cabernet Merlot has weight combined with a lovely depth of flavour and complexity. The wine has blackcurrant, raisins, liquorice and spice flavours balanced by the soft, plum roundness of the Merlot and a touch of vanillan. This is a very versatile wine that is ideal for a barbecue or any roast dishes such as lamb or beef.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The Cabernet Merlot has aromas of blackcurrant, liquorice, blood plum, and a hint of mint and spicy oak. The palate is concentrated and balanced with flavours of red fruit, raisins, plum and a touch of mint backed with gentle oak. The wine has richness and weight with fine tannins and a long lingering finish. Drinks very beautifully now, but will cellar for a further 3 to 5 years.

Vineyard Notes
Warm conditions prevailed during the 2015 growing season leading to the Cabernet and Merlot fruit being hand-picked over multiple passes in optimum condition.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was crushed into a combination of small open fermenters and stainless steel tanks. The batches were individually handled with hand plunging and pumping over occurring each day during fermentation. At dryness the wine was pressed to French barriques (15% new) were they matured for 12 months before being bottled.
Food Pairing Notes
Roast beef with a mustard and red wine marinade
