Balgownie Estate

2015 Balgownie Estate Chardonnay Bendigo

2015 Balgownie Estate Chardonnay Bendigo

"Off vines planted in 1978 and 1983. Whole bunch pressed to barrel (25% new) for eleven months with no lees stirring. Toasty and creamy, there's a dabble of pear and a surge of nectarine. Buttered popcorn, a touch of oyster shell fades to the background as lemon curd appears to shoulder that away. Caramalised peach and some fig add more intrigue. Nougat finishes late with fuller and rounded finish.

There's soothing appeal here. Drink now to eight years. 92/100"

Tasting Notes
A sensational delicate, medium-bodied wine with lovely ripe white peach character, hints of honey, cream, nougat and a touch of lemon. The palate is lovely and complex with flavours of white peach, honey, melon, cream and a hint of spice and lime, balanced by crisp acid and gentle oak. There is a beautiful creamy, textural mouthfeel in the mid-palate that gives way to a long and fine finish.

Vineyard Notes
The chardonnay vineyard was planted in Bendigo in 1976 and has matured into an exceptional vineyard producing exquisitely balanced fruit using minimal irrigation. The chardonnay grapes were hand-harvested in cool conditions at the perfect point of balance between ripeness and acidity.
Winemaker Notes
Our Estate Chardonnay was whole bunch pressed and provided free run juice with a balance of concentrated flavours, acid and notable elegance. A portion of the juice was fermented using wild yeast to enhance complexity. Barrel fermentation took place over a six week period after which the wine was aged on lees for a further eleven months. Regular batonnage (lees stirring) was employed to promote mid-palate complexity and mouthfeel. After time in oak barriques our Chardonnay was carefully filtered and bottled. With careful cellaring this wine will continue to develop over 5 to 8 years.
