2013 Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz Image

2013 Balgownie Estate Old Vine Shiraz

“It’s picked from the best 12 rows of the original ’69 plantings. The wine takes volume of flavour and gives it a nudge, and does so with a masterful sense of control, even poise. It’s firm, rich, warm; it’s both as essay on style and a vote for substance. Rating 96 Drink to 2035.”   James Halliday in the 2017 Wine Companion

Tasting Notes
"Every bit the flasghip wine it is too. Impenetrably dark red, the oak plays a big part in the story here, with the coffeed flavours notable from nose to tail. That barrel character matches nicely with the very thick flavours, the oak giving richness and contributing some tannin to what is already a very full flavoured red." Andrew Graham Oz Wine Review

Vineyard Notes
The 2013 season was warm to hot with low disease pressure which provided excellent fruit for the Old Vine Shiraz. The best twelve rows from the original 1969 plantings of our Shiraz block were hand harvested during March and delivered ideal fruit with complexity, richness and a depth of flavour. Yields in the vineyard were kept to the very low level of 1.5 tonnes to the acre to maintain the intensity of flavour and the balance in the berries. The grapes were hand harvested, with pickers discarding any bunches that were not top quality.
Winemaker Notes
The Old Vine Shiraz was made using traditional wine making techniques. It was destemmed into open vats where it was fermented over ten days with daily hand plunging. After a further week of maceration on skins to extract flavour and fine tannins, the wine was pressed and then racked to barrel. The wine was matured in a combination of new and old French oak barrels for twenty-four months prior to racking and bottling. The Old Vine Shiraz was finally bottle matured for the next three years prior to release.
Food Pairing Notes
Standing rib roast served with Paris mash.
