2013 Balgownie Estate Centre Block Shiraz

This is a limited release single vineyard wine from the Centre Block vineyard in Bendigo. The Centre Block contains some of the oldest and well established vines on the property. Planted in deep red sandy loam soils derived from ancient creek flats the vines produce premium fruit with elegant tannins and sensational structure. The 2013 vintage was a consistently warm vintage and produced lovely rich, ripe fruit with firm tannins and beautiful structure.

"Black fruit and lots of concentration -it's a really big black wine, the oak folding into the black fruit and oak. Superb concentration and impact, if just a little scorched around the edges. Black ink and cocoa powder in a style that is perhaps a little too boozy and warm but has no shortage of concentration. Much to grab hold of." Drink: 2015-2025. 17.7/20, 92/100. Mike Frost’s Review “Nose: Restrained dark berry and plum, with oak in the background. Palate: Concentrated dark berry and plum, with some spice and a touch of vanilla oak in the background. Fruit nicely dominant on elegant medium-bodied palate, with fine, firm tannins on the finish. Should age well for up to a decade. Rating 94.”
Vineyard Notes
2013 was a warm growing season that produced lovely ripe fruit with plenty of flavour. Yields in the vineyard were kept very low at around 1.5 tonnes per hectare to increase the flavour concentration and intensity in the berries. The grapes were carefully hand harvested through March to ensure that only berries of exceptional quality were picked for use in the final wine.
Winemaker Notes
The fruit was destemmed and partially crushed before being pumped to open vats for fermentation. Hand plunging and minimal pump overs provided gentle extraction from the skins and maintained the quality of the fruit. Once fermentated to dryness the wine pumped into French oak barrels (40% new) for 18 months.
